Overview

A matchup I personally wanted to see along with about every other soccer fan in the world. The neighbours square off again in their first competitive match since the 1986 World Cup. The victor will earn a place in the semifinals, and if history repeats itself, the rights to Alsace-Lorraine.

It's a surprisingly infrequent rivalry between the two European rivals. Just 25 meetings in their history. They have played just 5 games since 2000, although 2 of those have come in the past 2 years with both sides earning 2-1 road wins.

Both sides enter the game surprisingly fit considering they've had to deal with injury woes throughout the tournament. Shkodran Mustafi is the only casualty for Germany although the return of Mats Hummels from flu would have put him on the bench regardless. France still have questions about Mamadou Sakho's knee and an illness for Raphael Varane but both centre backs are expected to play in this game. Will be interesting to see their fitness in this game though.

Germany have gone a false nine formation throughout this tournament and barring a major surprise will continue with that. I expect to see 4 or 5 German players take shots at being the striker in this game and sticking with what works best against a France back line that has given up little in the way of shots at Hugo Lloris this tournament. Germany's biggest concern this game will be their full backs matched up with Griezmann and Valbuena on the wings. There's a big speed advantage for France out there and the always dangerous Benzema in the centre of the field.

France have stuck with primarily the same lineup this tournament and shouldn't have any drastic changes today. The only questions are regarding Giroud and their centre backs. Olivier Giroud started against Nigeria last game but was in poor form and France picked their game up when Griezmann entered. Would anticipate Giroud is on the bench for this game with Benzema back in as the centre forward. Should 1 of the centre backs not be able to play, Laurent Koscielny has filled in admirably this tournament. Should they both be out then France have a huge problem.

Personnel

In the French Third: Written assuming Sakho/Varane play. Germany blew out Portugal in their opening match but in the 3 following games, have scored just 3 goals in regulation. This is a team that is hurting without a natural striker, despite Thomas Muller having 4 goals to his credit. Germany have spent far too much time operating outside opponents penalty areas and trying to set up the perfect goal opportunities rather then putting their heads down and just going at goal. France will be happy if they want to stay out of their area but France also won't allow Germany all day to move around. I expect Germany to have a slog trying to penetrate the French lines and barring some miracle strikes from distance, goals will be tough to find today. Advantage: France.

In the Midfield: Some fantastic individual matchups here as Cabaye/Matuidi/Pogba take on Schweinsteiger/Kroos/Lahm. Strictly on personnel, advantage has to go to Germany due to both quality and experience together. The French midfield are no slouches though. They're careful with the ball, they distribute well and they can pressure teams defensively. Germany a bit more organized both offensively and defensively though which may pose issues for the French. Advantage: Germany.

In the German Third: Time for some questions to be asked of the German defenders and also of the French tactics. France have a tendency to funnel balls towards the centre of the field on attack. Part of this is philosophy, part of it is that you have Karim Benzema in a shooting position. I feel that would be a mistake today. Germany's strength defensively lies in the middle with Lahm/Mertesacker/Hummels. Attacking them head-on is a recipe for failure. France need to take this game wide with Valbuena and Griezmann and go after Boateng and Howedes. Howedes lacks the pace to stay with Valbuena and I feel Griezmann can take advantage of some poor defensive awareness by Boateng. France attacks the wing and they should be fine. Attack the middle and they'll get trounced. Advantage: Even.

Goalkeeping: Not even going to attempt to pick these 2 apart for differences. Advantage: Even.

France will win if:

Defensively Algeria provided a key for France to emulate. Have to be able to harry Germany on the ball and get them out of their comfort zone while maintaining your defensive shape. Too passive and Germany will take their time and pick France apart. Too aggressive and you're taking your chances as Germany punish small mistakes as good as anyone. Aggressive when the ball is in your zone to force turnovers but don't allow yourself individually to get drawn from your assignment. Offensively, work away at the wings and then look for Benzema/Pogba, etc. once the ball is deep.

Germany will win if:

Please attack. I mean that both objectively and subjectively. The midfield passing around is not going to get Germany anywhere against a surprisingly disciplined French team. Have to work their way through midfield with a specific goal in mind and that goal should have Hugo Lloris in front of it. Defensively, I personally feel Philipp Lahm should be in the back four with Howedes on the bench but Joachim Low doesn't appear to be taking suggestions. Need to keep their full backs further back today so they are in a position to defend against the French counter-attack and keep their wingers in front of them.

Prediction

Have gone back and forth on this about half a dozen times. Trying to reconcile fact that I feel France's defence is up to the task and they can exploit Germany's with speed, with the fact that France were a laughing stock not so long ago and are facing a team that hasn't exited from this stage in this millennium.

Current form wins out.

Game 56 Recap: Belgium 2-1 (ET) USA

BELGIUM 2-1 (ET) USA

The clock ran out on the U.S.'s run through the 2014 World Cup but it was an exciting way to go out. Belgium meanwhile find themselves in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, after a hard-fought deserved win over the United States.

While they lost the game, Tim Howard was the big story today. Howard's 16-save performance is a World Cup record that no future goalkeeper will ever hope they have to try and match.

Howard's long day began almost from the opening kick. A quick through ball to Divock Origi forced a point blank kick save from Howard in the opening seconds, in what would have been a disaster for the Americans.

All Belgium to start the contest off but the U.S. was able to settle in after some opening jitters and slow the tempo of the game down. The Americans found a chance in the 21st minute as Clint Dempsey struck the ball off the feet of Michael Bradley but Thibaut Courtois was able to comfortably catch the shot.

Belgium slowly began imposing their will on the match. Kevin De Bruyne made a great cut to the centre of the field but flubbed a shot on a rush that sputtered well wide. Jan Vertonghen followed that with another run down the left flank but missed a cross to a wide open Marouane Fellaini at the front of goal.

Spent most of the half in their own end but the U.S. did get a spark from DeAndre Yedlin on the right flank. Yedlin, on as an injury substitute for Fabian Johnson was one of the few quality performers for the U.S. today outside of Howard and his cross in the 39th minute just failed to find Clint Dempsey in the Belgian area.

In to the second half and it was all Belgium. They should have taken the lead in the 54th minute as a low Vertonghen cross shot across goal but it somehow skipped straight through Origi's legs in the six yard box and went harmlessly out the back.

Origi and Vertonghen continued to provide problems for the Americans. Origi headed a cross by Toby Alderweireld in to the crossbar and Vertonghen nearly sent a wicked curling shot in to the far corner before it sailed wide. Origi then worked a give-and-go with Dries Mertens but that shot too sailed wide.

On as a substitute in the 60th minute, Kevin Mirallas added a new threat for Belgium, continually darting and weaving through the American defence. One of those runs led to an Origi shot in the 71st minute but Howard's challenge turned the ball aside.

Several more chances for Belgium as the half wore down but again Tim Howard was there. Mirallas, Eden Hazard, Origi and Vincent Kompany all saw attempts on goal turned aside and Belgian fans had to wonder how they would ever get through Howard in extra time. It almost didn't get to that point.

A failure to clear in the Belgian penalty area in injury time left the U.S. with a 2 on 0 from point blank range. Chris Wondolowski was right on the spot to volley the ball home but somehow hammered the ball high from close range. It was a stunning miss that you would expect a player at this level to finish given the opportunity. The sporting gods would say Belgium deserved the victory but that will do little for Wondolowski who will be reliving that opportunity for years.

The U.S. dam finally broke in extra time. Fresh substitute Romelu Lukaku broke past Matt Besler down the right wing and in to the U.S. area. His cross didn't land find a teammate but Kevin De Bruyne was able to collect it, turn around his defender and tuck the ball past Howard for the Belgium lead.

It was the Lukaku show for the rest of the half. With fresh legs and newly regained form, he had his way with the exhausted U.S. defence. Beat his man on the rush twice but both times was foiled by Howard. As the half was ending though, De Bruyne played him forward and his shot sailed between Howard and the near post to give Belgium the 2-0 lead and what appeared to be a certain victory.

Somehow though, the U.S. stormed back, and it was the most unlikely of sources to get them going. His inclusion on this squad (over Landon Donovan) was criticized greatly but in his first action of the World Cup, fresh substitute Julian Green pulled the U.S. one back. Green got past Alderweireld on a rush and volleyed a lob from Michael Bradley in to the fingertips of Courtois and past for a goal.

Suddenly it was Belgium on their heels after having dominated the game. Jermaine Jones' flick on a free ball in the Belgian area skirted just wide of the post immediately following the Green goal.
But the U.S. last chance was arguably their best. A perfectly worked set piece freed Dempsey on a short breakaway but Courtois was able to stand tall and keep the ball out of the net. The U.S. would get no closer to a tying goal.

Tremendous heart and fight for the Americans but ultimately the correct result in the end as Belgium move on to face Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Man of the Match

Tim Howard set a World Cup record with 16 saves in this contest and was the single reason the U.S. had a chance at winning in this game. Huge save after huge save to keep Belgium at bay throughout the match. Special mention to Romelu Lukaku. Only played 30 minutes but chipped in a goal and assist in his substitute performance and came close on at least 2 other rushes.

Key Moment

In the waning seconds of the second half, the U.S. was gifted an opportunity in the Belgium penalty area. Point-blank against Thibaut Courtois, Chris Wondolowski volleyed a free ball over the crossbar and out of play. It was a stunning miss that would have surely been the winner for the Americans. Was a sense that the U.S. had missed their chance at winning and 15 minutes later, they were trailing 2-0.

What we learned from Belgium

Far and away outclassed their opponents today. Probably should have won this game in regulation but  have to factor in the play of Tim Howard. Got better as the game went on which speaks volumes of their fitness level. The US looked gassed at the end but Belgium were still flying all over the pitch. May have let off at 2-0 but can't be too harsh about that. They had done everything necessary to be way ahead without extra time.

What we learned from USA

Tim Howard may have played his last World Cup match and if it was, it was a heck of a way to go it. The best player on the field for either team and put the U.S in a position to succeed. As for everyone else, limited bright spots. Felt the defensive cohesion wasn't up to standard which is why Howard was so busy. Needed more pressure and ball movement through the midfield and had no finishing until the end of the game. Future definitely bright with guys like Green and Yedlin who were excellent off the bench. Had a chance to win, didn't deserve to today though.

Going Forward

The U.S. have a transition period ahead of them as several players are likely gone for the next World Cup cycle. Will be curious to see how they develop in the future.

Belgium advances to the quarterfinals to meet an Argentina team that hasn't been impressive despite four wins so far. That game promises to be an exciting one and the potential for a Belgian upset over the South Americans.

Overview

The other fascinating game of the day pairs two upstart teams that are looking to be a darkhorse in this World Cup and perhaps make a run for the championship game in a favourable draw.

They're also teams that have played each other in recent history, with Belgium coming out on top of a 4-2 contest last year. That was a game marred by defensive lapses and errors by the Americans. This game should be considerably closer though as the U.S. defence has been solid in group play and 2-goal scorer from that game Christian Benteke is at home injured.

Some key injury issues for both teams as they enter this contest. Belgium will likely have a makeshift defensive line on the field, as both Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen are expected to miss the game with nagging injuries. This is a Belgian team that also has been playing natural centre backs on the wings and may be throwing together a complete patchwork of players at the back in this contest.

Unfortunately for the U.S., their ability to take advantage of a weak Belgian defence is hampered by their own injury issues. Jozy Altidore has played just limited minutes in their first match of the group stage before picking up a hamstring injury. Altidore has been cleared to play but match fitness has to be questioned and it would be a considerable surprise if he were to start this game.

Belgium should come out in a 4-2-3-1 formation regardless of defensive personnel issues. They key men the U.S. have to deal with are Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne in the midfield. Both are dynamic dribblers and can deliver pinpoint balls in to the penalty area. Romelu Lukaku will likely start as striker despite poor form but provides a considerable aerial threat along with Marouane Fellaini.

Jurgen Klinsmann has varied his formation this tournament out of necessity after the Altidore injury. How the U.S. lines up is dependent on whether he starts or not. Their preferred formation is a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield shape but they have gone with a 4-5-1 using Dempsey as a false nine type striker in the meantime. The 4-4-2 bolsters their offensive potential considerably but the 4-5-1 has afforded them better defensive zone coverage.

Personnel

In the Belgian Third: I'm operating under the assumption Altidore will be a substitute at best in this contest. That's bad news for the U.S. Altidore has had scoring woes all year but is an ideal target man with his size and skill. More importantly though, it frees up Dempsey to be a second forward which is he best suited for and takes the creative responsibility off of just Michael Bradley's shoulders. This is a depleted Belgian defence but the U.S. are not the type of offensive team to take full advantage of that. Belgium's injuries are more devastating but that's only evened the match out. Advantage: Even.

In the Midfield: Expected to be the strength of this Belgian team, they haven't lived up to that billing so far. Haven't been able to get consistent ball movement offensively against pressing teams up the field. The U.S. will certainly be pressing Belgium on the ball without abandoning defensive shape. The U.S. has been equally as unimpressive in the midfield but may be able to take advantage of an attacking Belgian side on the counter-attack today. Advantage: Even.

In the U.S. Third: I'm torn here between Belgium's scoring woes and the fact that they have personnel that can explode offensively given the opportunity. The U.S. have held up well against 3 dangerous attacks in group play but Belgium love to pounce on the smallest errors that can occur. Belgium can beat the U.S. aerially with Lukaku/Fellaini or off the wings with players like Hazard and Mertens. Despite circumstances, I also can't ignore they hung 4 on this team a year ago. Advantage: Belgium.

Goalkeeping: Two of the elite goalkeepers in the world square off. Courtois the advantage in size and athleticism, Howard the advantage in experience and control over his area. I feel Courtois is the better of the two but Howard has one of the top penalty-saving records of any keeper in the past few years. Advantage: Even.

Belgium will win if:

Be wary of the American counter-attack and work the ball deep down to the end line on attack. Belgium's strength in this tournament in the offensive third has been their speed on the wings and height in the penalty area. Need to get the ball deep down in to U.S. territory and either cut to goal or send crosses from there. The other reason for this is it forces the U.S. to go the length of the field in counter-attack. Belgium have been sloppy with the ball so far and the U.S. are one of the top counter-attacking teams around. Can't allow them to go a short field on the rush.

USA will win if:

Pressure Belgium through the midfield and hope they will turn the ball over going forward. Defensively, the two centre backs have to be on point and understand where both Lukaku and Fellaini are in their area to prevent them from getting free headers. Offensively, attack the wings and look to get behind Alderweireld/Vertonghen (or their replacements) and take advantage of the lack of pace on the Belgian defence.

Prediction

Very close game and I imagine it takes 120 minutes at least to be completed. Don't know how well the U.S. fares offensively with or without Altidore despite Belgium's injury woes. But also don't think Belgium can beat the U.S. pressure and get the quality chances they would expect to. I said in my knockout round predictions this game was most likely to get to penalty kicks. Still feel that's the case.

Game 54 Recap: Germany 2-1 (ET) Algeria

GERMANY 2-1 (ET) ALGERIA

It took about 30 more minutes then expected but a pair of extra time goals sent Germany through to the quarterfinals over a very game Algerian opponent.

Germany struggled for much of this game, stifled by an Algerian defence determined to keep them from scoring in this match. Limited in their own offensive chances, Algeria continuously looked to beat the German defence on long lobs over the top.

One of those created some early excitement. Manuel Neuer came yards outside of his own penalty area to try and clear a ball and ended up playing as a centre back against Islam Slimani. Fortunately for Germany, he was able to deflect the ball out for a corner kick. It would hardly be the last time in the game that Neuer played sweeper in the German defensive line.

Germany's troubles with Algeria's offensive speed continued to cause issues early on. Sofiane Feghouli snuck behind the defenders but his sharp angle shot angled just over the crossbar. Faouzi Ghoulam hooked a shot from inside the area just wide of the far post, moments after Islam Slimani's headed goal was waved off due to an offside.

It wasn't until the 41st minute that Germany managed a quality chance at goal. Toni Kroos shot from the midfield was destined for goal until Rais M'Bolhi directed it back out front. The rebound fell to Mario Gotze but M'Bolhi challenged and made the second save as well to preserve the 0-0 scoreline at halftime.

In an effort to get the offence going, Germany brought Andre Schurrle in at halftime. Schurrle nearly got Germany going immediately as he snuck off the wing in to the Algerian penalty area. His shot was partially blocked but nearly skipped in to the Algerian goal anyway. On the ensuing corner kick, Shkodran Mustafi was able to make contact with the ball but sent it square at M'Bolhi.

Germany continued to apply pressure as Philipp Lahm fired a quality strike from outside the area but M'Bolhi was able to dive and get enough of a hand on the ball to parry just wide of goal. Germany continued to be the better of the teams in the second half but Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger both saw quality chances turned away again by M'Bolhi.

With a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, Algeria had hopes to pull out a shock victory in the extra period but it was Germany that ended the deadlock almost right after the restart. Muller streaked down the wing and delivered a low cross in to the Algerian area. The top offensive player since entering the game, Schurrle managed to get a tricky reverse heel flick on the ball, deflecting it in to the far corner for the opening goal of the game.

Algeria nearly responded in the 102nd minute but Mehdi Mostefa fired a shot just wide of goal off a frantic corner kick. Germany weren't satisfied sitting back in defence though and as the clock ticked down, they picked up the insurance marker they sought through Mesut Ozil. Algeria abandoned their own end leading to an Ozil and Schurrle 2-on-1. Schurrle's shot was blocked off the line but the rebound fell to Ozil who made sure no one could stop his shot.

Algeria refused to quit and pulled one back in injury time of the extra frame but it was too little, too late as Germany escaped with the 2-1 victory.

Man of the Match

Fans voted Rais M'Bolhi Man of the Match in a losing effort. Germany had 22 shots on goal in this match and yet were scoreless after 90 minutes. M'Bolhi wasn't culpable on either German goal and was the lone reason the game got to extra time at all. I also liked Andre Schurrle off the bench for Germany. Added some pace and finishing touch to the game that Germany weren't getting from Mario Gotze.

Key Moment

Wasn't officially the winning goal thanks to a late marker by Algeria but Andre Schurrle's goal to start extra time was the nail in the coffin so to speak for Algeria. Algeria had to hope for a reprieve from the German pressure after the break but instead found themselves down with limited time on the clock. Could never get sustained offensive pressure going until the end when the game was over.

What we learned from Germany

Not sure if this was a tactical problem for Germany or all about execution. Felt they were completely unprepared to handle the high Algerian pressure and their quick counter-attacks although that's all they've done so far this tournament. Scrambling frequently on defence and Mertesacker/Howedes continually burned by a lack of speed. Said last game and will say again, they need a striker on the field. Schurrle was a quality source of chances when he entered but terrible finishing on the whole from the rest of the team.

What we learned from Algeria

Felt they did exactly what they needed to in order to have a shot at winning in this game. Prevented Germany from getting quality shots off and constantly looked for the long ball against the German defence. Had limited success finishing as Germany were able to find ways to clear the ball from their own zone. Nothing to be ashamed of in this game. Held one of the best teams in the world to a draw for over 90 minutes.

Going Forward

Algeria's exit means Asia and Africa are officially done in this tournament. Overview

The second game of the day is a bigger mismatch then the first according to oddsmakers. Some places have Germany as high as a 2-goal favourite in this Round of 16 match against Algeria. It's Algeria's first time in the knockout round of the World Cup, while Germany have finished 3rd or better in every World Cup since 2002.

It would be a mistake for Germany to overlook this Algerian side though. Capable defensively and lightning-quick on the counter-attack, Algeria have the potential to compete with any squad in the world and will surely make Germany work for everything in this game.

Fortunately for Algeria, they're up against a German squad that is still trying to figure out the formula for winning this World Cup. Constantly tinkering with their personnel, Germany have looked out of sorts in this tournament, despite scoring 7 goals and winning their group comfortably. It's a testament to their excellence over the years that a group showing like this is considered disappointing.

Algeria themselves have shuffled their personnel through the tournament although primarily to give a different look to teams. 17 different players started for Algeria in the group stage, so Vahid Halilhodzic should have plenty of decisions to make in choosing his squad. Regardless of personnel, expect this to be a side loaded with defenders but ready to spring out in attack if Germany are caught in the offensive end.

Another big question to watch in this game is the Miroslav Klose goal watch. Not likely to start again but should make an appearance off the bench at some point this game. The 36 year old German striker is tied with Brazil's Ronaldo on 15 career World Cup goals, the most of anyone in history. Klose you can imagine is desperately seeking one more tally to take hold of the all-time goal record.

Personnel

In the German Third: Some potential for concern for Germany when Algeria counter-attack. Algeria the long ball to their striker and wingers to create one on one chances. Germany full of elite talent in the back end but not the ideal pace to keep up with the Algerians at a full sprint. Germany the better team when their defence gets set but have to be careful on the fast break. Advantage: Cautiously Germany.

In the Midfield: There was a stat ESPN posted in the early minutes of Germany's last game. After about 6-7 minutes, Germany had completed 73 passes. The U.S. had completed 7. No one dominates midfield possession and tempo like Germany. Advantage: Germany.

In the Algerian Third: Germany may again try a new lineup of personnel and will surely shift positions during the game. Too much skill and players capable of scoring for Algeria to handle though, regardless of roles. Advantage: Germany.

Goalkeeping: M'Bolhi has been passable in the Algerian goal despite surrendering 5 goals this tournament. No match for Manuel Neuer in the German net though. Advantage: Germany.

Germany will win if:

Lather, rinse, repeat. There are few teams in the world that Germany need to adjust their tactics for and Algeria isn't one of them. Control the ball in the Algerian half and be wary of the quick ball over the top of their defenders and they will win this game.

Algeria will win if:

Try to frustrate Germany in your own half. Best way to do that is an aggressive zone type defence. Try to harry them on the ball but don't allow yourself to be pulled out of position. Offensively, look for long balls to players matched up against Howedes and Mertesacker and take advantage of their lack of speed. Get anything on goal when they have a chance, because there won't be many opportunities.

Prediction

I like Algeria and I think given the right matchup, they could make some waves in this round. Germany isn't the right matchup. Germany wins comfortably, scores in both halves.

Overview

Game that's lacking the publicity of the early ones today but is by itself perhaps most important to the fates of the teams playing. Barring a Korean upset, second place in Group H will go to one of these teams.

Algeria hold the advantage in the group having defeated South Korea in their last game with a 4-goal outburst. Russia meanwhile have been lackluster so far this tournament, scoring just once in 2 games and showing little in the way of initiative going forward.

Algeria will be in tough trying to replicate their offensive success from last game today. Russia are very stout defensively and typically push back when threatened to avoid the long balls over the top that crushed South Korea when they played Algeria. Only needing a draw though, the fate of this game may lie in Algeria's defence. They won't be terrified of this Russian attack but are not world-beaters either.

Both teams play variants of 4-2-3-1 formations. Algeria is expected to field a similar lineup to the one that defeated Korea and why not? Russia on the other hand have all kinds of personnel issues and inexplicably have not started arguably their best 2 players (Kerzhakov and Dzagoev) in either game so far. England fans are just sitting there shaking their head consolably. They understand the frustration that is Fabio Capello.

Personnel

In the Algerian Third: Algeria lack a lot of the field awareness that you see from the elite teams and that may hurt them today. Russia not particularly dangerous up front but they do know how to find space to attack in. Whether or not they take advantage of that space is another matter. Advantage: Even. Would say Russia but they've decided to leave 2 offensive weapons on the bench for whatever reason.

In the Midfield: The Russian defensive wall against Algeria's speed and pace. If Algeria are able to stretch the field vertically then Russia will be in a bad spot as they love to clog the midfield and can be slow getting back defensively. Russia's size and skill in possession will make that difficult though. Advantage: Even.

In the Russian Third: This is where Algeria may be able to have some success in this game. Russia are large and well-positioned defensively but are slow, particularly in the centre of the field. Algeria need to be able use their speed to attack Ignashevich and Berezutskiy and get shots on goal from in tight. Advantage: Algeria.

Goalkeeping: M'Bolhi has been ok this tournament but is not amongst the world's elite. Akinfeev let in a howler against Korea but looked strong despite losing to Belgium in their game. Advantage: Russia.

Algeria will win if:

Hold together defensively and wait to counter-attack over the top when Russia gave the ball up. Russia have to win and Algeria should expect Russia to try and force the play in to the Algerian half. If they can send balls high to their wingers and striker on the quick counter-attack then they can use their speed to get numbers against the Russian defence.

Russia will win if:

Back line has to keep the Algerian forwards in front of them. Can't allow them to get behind and track down balls for quick rushes. Keep possession and push high up the field to keep Algeria on their heels. This is not a particularly strong back line for Algeria, if Russia can pressure them they'll find the goals they need to advance.

Prediction

Same as every other Russia game I see. Dull. Algeria's speed and long balls against the defence are good for a goal but can't hold off Russia forever.

Overview

It's win or go home time for South Korea if they want to keep their World Cup going. Standing in the way is a Belgian side that has underperformed despite winning both of their first 2 matches.

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has already stated he will be resting several players in this game to get them healthy before the Round of 16. Whether or not Korea are able to take advantage of those absences (mostly on defence) remains to be seen.

Korea scored twice against Algeria last game but that was just the 3rd game in their last 8 in which Korea had managed to find the back of the net. This is a team that is struggling in both ends of the field coming in, never a good sign as they prepare to face tournament darlings Belgium.

Korea employ a variation of a 4-4-1-1 formation with Son Heung-Min playing a floating role between the striker and the midfielders. Son being on form is key for Korea to have any success against Belgium, as he can both facilitate the ball and score himself.

Belgium should stick with their 4-2-3-1 formation in this game. Exact personnel changes are not known but it is expected Divock Origi will be given the start in place of Romelu Lukaku as striker. Lukaku has been a non-factor in Belgium's first 2 group games.

Personnel

In the Korean Third: Bad news for Korea here is that Eden Hazard is expected to play. This is a Korean defensive line that frankly can't stop anything right now. Even if Belgium rest players, they have plenty of attacking talent on the bench to make up for it. Advantage: Belgium.

In the Midfield: Korea is likely to push their midfield higher up the field today needing a win. Belgium haven't been overly confident in possession and may have difficulty with the pace and energy of Korea. Advantage: Even.

In the Belgian Third: Van Buyten may be the only Belgian starter on their back line to play today. Entirely possible that Belgium goes with all backups defensively. This would be a concern for many teams, but Belgium's depth is excellent in the back and Korea offer little in the way of quality scoring options anyway. Advantage: Belgium.

Goalkeeping: Thibaut Courtois vs. 4 goals surrendered to Algeria. Advantage: Belgium.

South Korea will win if:

Have to go full out-attack from the start. They need a win by a few goals and help from the other Group H game to advance. And with all due respect, their defensive line is horrendous. Sticking guys back in support isn't going to help that, it's only going to ensure they don't advance from this group. Go for broke in this game, pressure Belgium as high and as much as possible and hope they can take advantage of a second-string Belgian defence.

Belgium will win if:

Slow the game down as much as possible, minimize turnovers and look for long balls over the top to beat the Korean press. Belgium have an opportunity to pile goals on in this game, if they can get through the Korean line at midfield. Easier said then done and they'll be harried all game, but if they can limit the times Korea takes the ball off them and beat the press, they'll be rewarded. Frequently.

Prediction

Korea has a chance to take advantage of a 2nd-string Belgian team but few teams have better depth in this tournament. Even Belgium at 2nd-rate is probably a better team then everyone else in the group. I expect Korea to cause a few problems but unable to pull out the victory and their back line lets them down again.
