Game 57 Starting Lineups (France vs. Germany)

Game preview here.
Starting Lineups below:

France

Ideal starting XI for France in my opinion. Same as their opener against Honduras.

France 4-3-3 football formation

Substitutes:

Goalkeepers: Mickael Landreau (#23), Stephane Ruffier (#16)

Defenders: Lucas Digne (#17), Laurent Koscielny (#21), Eliaquim Mangala (#13), Bacary Sagna (#15)

Midfielders: Remy Cabella (#7), Rio Mavuba (#12), Morgan Schneiderlin (#22), Moussa Sissoko (#18)

Forwards: Olivier Giroud (#9), Loic Remy (#20)

Germany

Now this is the German lineup I have been clamoring for all tournament. Lahm in the backfield, Klose starting. Gotze and Mertesacker on the bench. This could cause problems for France.

Germany 4-5-1 football formation

Substitutes:

Goalkeepers: Roman Weidenfeller (#22), Ron-Robert Zieler (#12)

Defenders: Erik Durm (#15), Matthias Ginter (#3), Kevin Grosskreutz (#2), Per Mertesacker (#17)

Midfielders: Julian Draxler (#14), Mario Gotze (#19), Christoph Kramer (#23), Andre Schurrle (#9)

Forwards: Lukas Podolski (#10)

Germany: Benedikt Howedes (Yellow Card), Philipp Lahm (Yellow Card), Shkodran Mustafi (Out - Hamstring)

Overview

A matchup I personally wanted to see along with about every other soccer fan in the world. The neighbours square off again in their first competitive match since the 1986 World Cup. The victor will earn a place in the semifinals, and if history repeats itself, the rights to Alsace-Lorraine.

It's a surprisingly infrequent rivalry between the two European rivals. Just 25 meetings in their history. They have played just 5 games since 2000, although 2 of those have come in the past 2 years with both sides earning 2-1 road wins.

Both sides enter the game surprisingly fit considering they've had to deal with injury woes throughout the tournament. Shkodran Mustafi is the only casualty for Germany although the return of Mats Hummels from flu would have put him on the bench regardless. France still have questions about Mamadou Sakho's knee and an illness for Raphael Varane but both centre backs are expected to play in this game. Will be interesting to see their fitness in this game though.

Germany have gone a false nine formation throughout this tournament and barring a major surprise will continue with that. I expect to see 4 or 5 German players take shots at being the striker in this game and sticking with what works best against a France back line that has given up little in the way of shots at Hugo Lloris this tournament. Germany's biggest concern this game will be their full backs matched up with Griezmann and Valbuena on the wings. There's a big speed advantage for France out there and the always dangerous Benzema in the centre of the field.

France have stuck with primarily the same lineup this tournament and shouldn't have any drastic changes today. The only questions are regarding Giroud and their centre backs. Olivier Giroud started against Nigeria last game but was in poor form and France picked their game up when Griezmann entered. Would anticipate Giroud is on the bench for this game with Benzema back in as the centre forward. Should 1 of the centre backs not be able to play, Laurent Koscielny has filled in admirably this tournament. Should they both be out then France have a huge problem.

Personnel

In the French Third: Written assuming Sakho/Varane play. Germany blew out Portugal in their opening match but in the 3 following games, have scored just 3 goals in regulation. This is a team that is hurting without a natural striker, despite Thomas Muller having 4 goals to his credit. Germany have spent far too much time operating outside opponents penalty areas and trying to set up the perfect goal opportunities rather then putting their heads down and just going at goal. France will be happy if they want to stay out of their area but France also won't allow Germany all day to move around. I expect Germany to have a slog trying to penetrate the French lines and barring some miracle strikes from distance, goals will be tough to find today. Advantage: France.

In the Midfield: Some fantastic individual matchups here as Cabaye/Matuidi/Pogba take on Schweinsteiger/Kroos/Lahm. Strictly on personnel, advantage has to go to Germany due to both quality and experience together. The French midfield are no slouches though. They're careful with the ball, they distribute well and they can pressure teams defensively. Germany a bit more organized both offensively and defensively though which may pose issues for the French. Advantage: Germany.

In the German Third: Time for some questions to be asked of the German defenders and also of the French tactics. France have a tendency to funnel balls towards the centre of the field on attack. Part of this is philosophy, part of it is that you have Karim Benzema in a shooting position. I feel that would be a mistake today. Germany's strength defensively lies in the middle with Lahm/Mertesacker/Hummels. Attacking them head-on is a recipe for failure. France need to take this game wide with Valbuena and Griezmann and go after Boateng and Howedes. Howedes lacks the pace to stay with Valbuena and I feel Griezmann can take advantage of some poor defensive awareness by Boateng. France attacks the wing and they should be fine. Attack the middle and they'll get trounced. Advantage: Even.

Goalkeeping: Not even going to attempt to pick these 2 apart for differences. Advantage: Even.

France will win if:

Defensively Algeria provided a key for France to emulate. Have to be able to harry Germany on the ball and get them out of their comfort zone while maintaining your defensive shape. Too passive and Germany will take their time and pick France apart. Too aggressive and you're taking your chances as Germany punish small mistakes as good as anyone. Aggressive when the ball is in your zone to force turnovers but don't allow yourself individually to get drawn from your assignment. Offensively, work away at the wings and then look for Benzema/Pogba, etc. once the ball is deep.

Germany will win if:

Please attack. I mean that both objectively and subjectively. The midfield passing around is not going to get Germany anywhere against a surprisingly disciplined French team. Have to work their way through midfield with a specific goal in mind and that goal should have Hugo Lloris in front of it. Defensively, I personally feel Philipp Lahm should be in the back four with Howedes on the bench but Joachim Low doesn't appear to be taking suggestions. Need to keep their full backs further back today so they are in a position to defend against the French counter-attack and keep their wingers in front of them.

Prediction

Have gone back and forth on this about half a dozen times. Trying to reconcile fact that I feel France's defence is up to the task and they can exploit Germany's with speed, with the fact that France were a laughing stock not so long ago and are facing a team that hasn't exited from this stage in this millennium.

Current form wins out.

Quarterfinal Bullets

Lack of posts today, got busy with other stuff. Will have some point-form breakdowns of the teams eliminated in the group stage tomorrow. Wanted to give some brief thoughts on each quarterfinal game though.

Brazil vs. Colombia
  • I picked Colombia to win this game and I'm sticking by that. Whether that is wise remains to be seen.
  • There were concerns on the weekend about Neymar's health after he picked up a knee injury against Chile but he is apparently training fully again. Neymar would have to be immobile not to play for Brazil in this tournament
  • Most exciting battle of the game won't be amongst players facing each other every play but between the number 10's Neymar and James Rodriguez. If I had to pick best player in the tournament right now it would be Rodriguez and not the host's star.
  • If I had to make any tough personnel decisions, I'd sit Fred for Brazil. They won't but they probably should. Neymar has spent half his time as a centre forward anyway, put him in the middle and Bernard on the wing in my opinion.
  • Brazil have a forced change to make in the midfield as Luiz Gustavo is suspended. That is a blow for Brazil because that's the best option on the roster for shutting Rodriguez down.
France vs. Germany
  •  Game looked much more exciting before the Round of 16 games were played as both limped through their matches. Still about a 13 out of 10 on the excitement factor.
  • Probably meeting earlier then they should, I have both teams in my top 5 in terms of a power ranking in this tournament.
  • I picked Germany to win this game. Not quite ready to change that pick yet but leaning towards France at this point.
  • Biggest concern I have for Germany is the lack of initiative offensively. France isn't going to let them pass the ball around forever in midfield and have kept their own penalty area shut tight. Without a striker, big concerns for Germany.
  • Defensively for Germany, you have speed on the wings and scoring from everywhere to be concerned with. If I were Joachim Low, I'd have both Schweinsteiger and Khedira in midfield so Lahm can go back to right back and Boateng can flip to left. This gives you your best chance at containing the French wingers and keeping things in the centre of the field where they'd prefer it.
 Netherlands vs. Costa Rica
  •  No one told Costa Rica that this was the quarterfinals of the World Cup. A complete shock name to see amongst the giants of soccer.
  • Regardless of whether this was Costa Rica or Greece as an opponent, this is a step down in competition for Netherlands. Always have to question their mental strength but that doesn't seem to be an issue and I fully expect them to control and win this game.
  • Costa Rica are without two starting players due to suspension (Tejeda and Duarte).
  • Netherlands will be without Nigel de Jong for the remainder of the World Cup. de Jong suffered an injury in the first half of the Mexico game. That is an issue for Louis van Gaal. He used Daley Blind as a holding midfielder after de Jong left and it led directly to a Mexico goal. Blind may take up that role again or we could see Jonathan de Guzman reinserted in to the lineup.
  • Netherlands have rotated between a 5-3-2 and a 4-3-3 this tournament. Fully expect a 4-3-3 this game as they should have 60+% of possession and the ball will spend majority of the time in the Costa Rican half.
Argentina vs. Belgium
  • Felt it would be the toughest quarterfinal to predict and it hasn't gotten any easier. Comparing Belgium with Switzerland, they don't have the same defensive organization but they aren't slouches. Much more dangerous on the attack though. Like to control possession in the midfield but they do so to work toward a chance on goal, as opposed to a Spain or Germany who pass for the sake of passing.
  • Argentina should have a tiny but more space in the offensive third but Belgium the biggest attacking threat they've faced so far.
  • Argentina are really missing Aguero. Had a poor tournament so far but draws defenders off of Messi in a way Lavezzi cannot replicate. That's a big part of why Switzerland could keep Messi out of the game and don't believe there's a solution for that.
  • Loved the Belgium lineup against the USA. Were confident in defence and used their size to their advantage. Deadly efficient on the counter-attack and finally got offence from their striker spot, both with Origi starting and with Lukaku off the bench. Lukaku the better player but is impact off the bench late in the game will probably keep Origi in the starting lineup.

Game 53 Recap: France 2-0 Nigeria

FRANCE 2-0 NIGERIA

It took a long time for them to get going but France did manage to pull out the victory in the end, defeating Nigeria 2-0 with a pair of late goals.

Not the sharpest performance from France and there's plenty for manager Didier Deschamps to ponder as they await their quarterfinal opponent.

France struggled to get the ball in to scoring position to open the game and surrendered a pair of great achances in the early going. Peter Odemwingie was able to get a free header at the back post but made a mess of the finish and popped the ball straight up for Hugo Lloris to collect. Emmanuel Emenike appeared to score minutes later when he tipped in a long cross but the goal was called back to an offside flag.

France did get the best chance of the period though in the 22nd minute. A great 2-man rush from Paul Pogba and Mathieu Valbuena led to a Valbuena cross to the top of the area. Pogba got everything on the volleyed shot but it was too close to Vincent Enyeama whose reactions allowed him to punch the ball off of his line.

France's problems getting through the Nigerian defence continued well in to the second half of play. Thankfully for them, Nigeria had their own offensive woes to deal with. Peter Odemwingie managed a quality shot from range in the 64th minute but that was as close as Nigeria would come to scoring in the match.

As the second half wore on, France settled in to the flow of the game. Karim Benzema nearly picked up his 4th goal of the tournament from in close but his rebounded shot was cleared off the line by Victor Moses. Blaise Matuidi just failed to get on the end of a cross and Yohan Cabaye rocketed a distant shot off the crossbar.

Benzema again had a glorious chance in the 79th but his close range header was turned away by Enyeama. France were not to be denied in this match though. On the ensuing corner kick, Enyeama challenged poorly and tipped the ball straight on to the head of Pogba who calmly headed home for the winning goal. Joseph Yobo deflected in an own goal under pressure from Antoine Griezmann to seal things in injury time.

Man of the Match

Easy decision in this game even before he scored the winning goal. Paul Pogba was everywhere in the midfield this game, making play after play in both ends. Nearly scored in the first half if not for a great reflex save by Vincent Enyeama. Deservedly got his first World Cup goal late in the second half with a gifted header from Enyeama.

Key Moment

With about half an hour left to play, Didier Deschamps pulled Olivier Giroud in favour of Antoine Griezmann. The difference in play for France was instantaneous. Griezmann provided additional pace and width to the attack and also allowed Karim Benzema to slide up top as the central striker where he belongs. Was all France in the last 25-30 minutes and Griezmann's entrance was a contributing factor to that.

What we learned from France

That was greatly concerning until the 75th minute or so. Too many turnovers in the midfield, weren't taking the chances afforded to them offensively and left Nigeria far too much space to operate in their end. The last 15 minutes of this game were great. If they play the first 75 in the quarterfinals though, they'll be going home after that match.

What we learned from Nigeria

Have to be able to go full speed for 90+ minutes in the World Cup and they didn't today. For parts of the first hour they were the better team on the field. Possession was close to even and they were able to move the ball through the midfield and close down the French attackers. They faded late though and France didn't. Completely overwhelmed at the end of the game. Both goals came off of tired, sloppy mistakes and those will kill you at any level.

Going Forward

Nigeria's exit means Algeria are the last African hope this World Cup. They will play Germany later today. France advance to the quarterfinals and will face intriguing matches either way.  Germany are a historic rival and the two are possibly the top European teams in the tournament, although Netherlands would disagree. If the upset occurs then they'll face an Algerian team with its own ties to rance. Roughly two-thirds of the Algerian team were either born or raised in France, and there is a large expat Algerian population in France.

Overview

One of the top teams in the group stages resumes their campaign today against a dangerous Nigerian squad. Four years ago at this time, France were embroiled in a huge scandal regarding player actions and performance in South Africa. Now they are being given 8/1 odds to win the 2014 World Cup.

Nigeria are the first obstacle for this French squad to get through if they want a shot at the trophy. And Nigeria bring a mix of speed and power to the field that France did not see in any of their group games.

France should stick with the 4-3-3 formation they have gone with this tournament. They are mostly healthy and have no suspensions so Didier Deschamps should have his full squad of players available for selection. France will likely revert to their lineup from their first two games after resting players against Ecuador. Potential selection issues exist in the midfield with whether Paul Pogba or Moussa Sissoko starts, and if Olivier Giroud finds his way in to the lineup as a forward.

Nigeria have gone with a 4-2-3-1 formation this tournament with only minor changes to their roster. They will definitely be without Michael Babatunde after he broke his wrist in the Argentina game but should have Victor Moses available again off injury.

France is expected to get their offence clicking again after being held scoreless against Ecuador. Nigeria will provide a stiff test for the young central defenders though, neither of which appear to be fully fit after last match.

Personnel

In the French Third: If you haven't seen Nigeria play, familiarize yourself with the name Emmanuel Emenike. The 27 year old Nigerian striker is the closest thing in the World Cup to a freight train as a forward. Has exceptional speed and power and is the focal point of this Nigeria offence. Nigeria have plenty of speed surrounding him but the key in this area will be effective play from Emenike. The French defence should be able to contain Emenike if they surround enough players around him. The key though will be to take him out of play without leaving their flanks open for his teammates. Advantage: Even.

In the Midfield: Speed and quick delivery if the ball are the name of the game offensively for Nigeria. France will counter that with their own speed and size and superb defensive organization through the midfield. On the ball, few teams this tournament have controlled play better then France and they will look to capitalize on Nigeria chasing the ball and pulling themselves out of position. Advantage: France.

In the Nigerian Third: Plenty of questions about Nigeria's organization and skill in their back four and that's a bad sign against this French team. France weren't clicking in their last game but part of that was personnel and they did still manage several shots on target. I expect Nigeria to have their hands as full here as they did last game when they surrendered 3 goals. Advantage: France.

Goalkeeping: Very little separating the goalkeepers in this game. Both experienced, both captains for their team. Lloris allowed fewer goals in group play but Enyeama looked the better prior to facing Argentina. Nitpicking to find anything separating these two. Advantage: Even

France will win if:

Shut Emenike down in your own half and get shots on Enyeama. This Nigerian offence flows entirely through Emenike as a lone striker. Dangerous running with the ball and laying off passes to his supporting players, Emenike having room to do what he wants will be very bad for France. Offensively, no need to try and be too fancy in the offensive third which they did against Ecuador. Get in to a scoring area and fire the ball on goal. Enyeama has given up some juicy rebounds this tournament and there will be second-chance opportunities if the first doesn't go in.

Nigeria will win if:

This is a tough one because there's obvious holes in the back line that France will exploit and France have very few weaknesses. Will have to stack their penalty area defensively and keep balls away from Enyeama as best as possible. On the counter-attack, need Emenike to hold balls up as long as possible so they can attack in numbers rather then merely turn the ball over with no numbers offensively.

Prediction

Nigeria get some runs upfield that terrorize the French defenders but France's offence far too good and efficient against this weak Nigerian line.

France 3-1 Nigeria

Knockout Round Predictions: Version II

You may remember that two weeks ago I posted my pre-tournament knockout round predictions. Here's what I had come up with:

That's compared with the actual bracket in the header.

Final tally on teams:
  • 10 of 16 correct
  • 8 of 16 in the correct slot
Dreadful in my opinion. Costa Rica, and the Iberian peninsula messed me up.

Anyway that's not the point of this post. Want to give an overview of the knockout round now that we actually know where everyone is slotted in. Have broken the bracket down in to 4 quarters and will then look at the semifinals/finals. REMINDER AS ALWAYS: I RESERVE JUDGMENT TO CHANGE THIS WHEN I DO GAME PREVIEWS. Without further ado:

Quarter 1

Yes, it appears that a CONMEBOL tournament has broken out in the midst of the World Cup. South American fans have to be thrilled to have 5 teams in the Round of 16. But with 4 in the same quarter, there's no more then 2 that can make the semifinals.

There are 2 constants in CONMEBOL soccer that I have observed. 1) Home field advantage means everything. Brazil would figure to have that advantage but there are plenty of visiting supporters from neighbouring countries at this tournament. 2) Expect the unexpected. On any given day, any of these four teams can beat the other.

In regard to BRAZIL-CHILE, I'm expecting goals and plenty of them. Both teams play fast-paced, sometimes irresponsible soccer but both love to attack. I'm tipping Brazil though due to how they match up personnel wise with Chile. Chile play a 3-man back line which can leave plenty of space in which opponents can operate. That's something Neymar, Oscar and co will surely be looking to take advantage of. I have BRAZIL winning that match.

It's a different COLOMBIA-URUGUAY contest now that Luis Suarez won't be involved. Only thing to go off of is Uruguay's outing against Costa Rica which was poor to say the least. This is a Uruguay team that needs Suarez in order to win games, plain and simple. Facing Colombia won't help either. Colombia has been scary good this tournament. Strong defensively and they punish you for any little mistake on the defensive end. COLOMBIA my pick out of this game. Likely would have taken them even if Suarez was available.

That leaves a BRAZIL-COLOMBIA quarterfinal and I'm completely torn on this. Brazil don't lose games on home soil but I'm just not convinced they're a strong enough team. Reliant heavily on Neymar's individual talent and lose track of players defensively too easily. Colombia work their star players in to their squad's strategy which is why they're so successful. Going with my gut in this game and will say COLOMBIA emerge as the victor in this contest.

Advancing: Colombia
Also have a chance: Brazil

Quarter 2

Unlike the above grouping, there should be little in the way of surprises here.

France have arguably been the best team in the tournament in the group stages. Their shooting fell apart a bit against Ecuador but their defensive line has been a rock and Karim Benzema should probably be alone in the scoring lead this tournament. Nigeria have stretched teams vertically with their speed and power up front but won't have that luxury against this French team. Enyeama will have to be spectacular in the Nigerian goal for them to have a shot in this one. FRANCE to beat Nigeria.

Similar situation in the other game, Algeria go up against a German side that has yet to play to their potential in this tournament. Algeria use their speed up high to get offensive chances and while Germany can be exploited defensively by quickness, their organization and shape will be tough to overcome for Algeria. More concerningly for the Africans though is Germany's ability to pick teams apart in the offensive third. The USA was the only team to hold up well against the German attack and Algeria isn't them. GERMANY in a comfortable win.

That sets up a gigantic clash between France and Germany in the quarterfinals. I think there's only one potential game that can match the hype and intrigue of this game and that would be a Brazil-Argentina final. If/when this match occurs it will likely be the longest game preview I've written. Won't look too closely at it here as it deserves proper attention. I would still take Germany in this match but that could change in a heartbeat.

Advancing: Germany
Also have a chance: France

Quarter 3

Certainly looks different from what I had predicted. I only had one of these 4 teams in the right slot and I didn't have either Costa Rica or Greece in the picture at all.

Right off the bat, Netherlands could not have asked for a better group of teams in this quarter. This is about as easy as a knockout round can get for a team. Granted it's the Netherlands and history tells me they may find a way to mess this up but this is a relative walk in to the semifinals for them.

Biggest concern for the Dutch has to be their first game. Mexico gave up just 1 goal in the group stages and that came in garbage time of their final match against Costa Rica. Mexico area phenomenal defensive team but they'll be put to the test against these Dutch strikers. van Persie and Robben are the top scoring duo in this tournament with 6 goals in 5 man-games (van Persie was suspended against Chile). When you have two players in form that are averaging over a goal per game EACH, you have a great chance of winning any game you play in. I see it being close and I see it being low-scoring but I don't see Mexico being on top at the end. NETHERLANDS to win.

It's always nice to see underdogs succeed and one of Costa Rica and Greece will find themselves in the quarterfinals. As a fan of quality soccer though, my face fell when Giorgos Samaras hit that penalty kick and ensured this match would become a thing. Greece are near intolerable to watch play. Game inevitably gets bogged down and slow frustrates opponents in to trying wild chances on goal that are never going to succeed. Costa Rica started the tournament on a tear before coming back to Earth in their match with England. I still believe their attacking initiative is superior and their defence near equal to that of Greece's. Combine that with better goalkeeping and COSTA RICA should advance from this match.

I sort of gave it away in my preface but I have NETHERLANDS winning in the quarterfinals. Same 2-3-5 formation as Costa Rica but Netherlands simply have better players and better execution in all aspects of the game. No need to overthink this one. FWIW, I would take Mexico over both Costa Rica and Greece should that be the quarterfinal match.

Advancing: Netherlands
Also have a chance: Mexico

Quarter 4

Outside of the CONMEBOL derby happening above, this is the most fascinating of the quarters to me because it's the only one where I see a scenario in which all 4 teams can get out of here.

Argentina-Switzerland is an interesting stylistic matchup. Argentina with the dynamic attacking offence and a really shaky central defence. Switzerland sort of an enigma this tournament, good at everything but not great in anything. If Argentina can step up defensively then I think they're in the driver's seat but I'm not ready to count Switzerland out just yet. My pick for now is ARGENTINA, but I may revisit that come game preview time.

Belgium and USA are incredibly similar style-wise which will either make it a fascinating tactical battle or 90+ minutes of drudgery. Personnel-wise, Belgium have the advantage in every facet of the game. But they just haven't looked very strong this tournament. Not the quick passing and runs that we expected from them and shaky in the back, particularly out wide. The U.S. aren't flashy but they trust their system and most importantly for them it works. Of all the Round of 16 games, this one screams PENALTY KICKS to me. I think whether it gets to that or not, BELGIUM wins but they aren't looking like the potential champion the way they were pegged prior to the tournament.

FWIW, I would likely take ARGENTINA over either Belgium or the USA in the quarterfinals. Things will get interesting though if Switzerland manage to beat Argentina. Regardless of whether their opponent is Belgium or the USA, I think any of those 3 teams could beat the other on any day.

Advancing: Argentina
Also have a chance: Everyone

FINALS

In my little exercise here, this is what I have come up with for semifinals.

The top matchup will be as big a test to Germany's formational strength and organization as anything. Germany have committed more turnovers then usual in this tournament and I feel no other team can better take advantage of that then Colombia. Colombia have been the best counter-attacking team in this tournament and are good enough defensively to hold up Germany. Being played on the home continent, I'm going away from my pre-tournament pick and saying COLOMBIA will emerge from this game.

The home advantage is to be considered in the second game as well (No European team has ever won in the Americas) but frankly I think Argentina will be a bit lucky to make it this far. Weak on defence and Messi has been completely shouldering the load in the goal-scoring department. Netherlands were expected to be in rebuild mode this tournament but they are more then capable of neutralizing Argentina's offence and have the best scoring tandem in the tournament. NETHERLANDS to advance to their second straight final.

Predicting third-place games is always a crapshoot. In my scenario, I'll take Germany, who have finished top 3 in each of the last 3 World Cups.

This leads me to my NETHERLANDS-COLOMBIA final. Personnel-wise, it's a wash in midfield and goal. Netherlands forwards I would give an advantage to against Colombia's defence, but I feel the Dutch can hold up against James Rodriguez and company with their defensive discipline. Yes, that's right folks. I have the NETHERLANDS finally getting over the hump and winning their first World Cup, having lost in 3 previous finals.

Below is my complete prediction:

Game 44 Recap: Ecuador 0-0 France

ECUADOR 0-0 FRANCE

A fine performance from Alexander Dominguez in Ecuador's goal stifled the potent French offence but the draw was not enough to send Ecuador through to the knockout round.

France meanwhile, secured first place in Group E despite failing to score in the contest and will meet Nigeria in the Round of 16.

France struggled a bit to get going in this game, with a roster that featured several new starters as Didier Deschamps looked to rest players ahead of the knockout round. Antoine Griezmann and Moussa Sissoko opened things up after a dozen minutes with shots at goal but they either flew wide or were well collected by Dominguez.

While they struggled to maintain possession or get any runs going in the half, it was Ecuador with the best chance in the first 45 minutes. Enner Valencia rose above Lucas Digne on a cross but his header went straight down instead of forward and allowed time for Hugo Lloris to get over and make the save.

Griezmann again nearly found the back of the net to open the second half, but his shot from close range deflected off Dominguez's arm and the post and stayed out. Ecuador's chances of picking up the win they needed took a nosedive just after when captain Antonio Valencia was sent off with a straight red card. A harsh call to say the least, Valencia appeared to accidentally get a leg up over the ball which ended in a studs up challenge on Digne.

The balance of the half became a shooting gallery for France. Time and again Benzema and others would load up and fire but some poor shooting from the French resulted in save after save for Dominguez. Ecuador did their best to get offensive pressure with 10 men but could not break down the French lines to pick up the goals they needed.

Goals

Discipline

Ecuador: Antonio Valencia (Red 50'), Frickson Erazo (Yellow 83')
France: N/A

Man of the Match

Alexander Dominguez. Far and away the best (or at least busiest) player on the field for Ecuador and time and again turned away France from scoring. Majority of saves were on shots directly at him but was constantly positioned correctly and kept Ecuador in the game despite them being down to 10 men.

Key Moment

Early in the second half, Ecuador captain Antonio Valencia appeared to slip off the ball and ended up getting his studs high in to the leg of Lucas Digne. Didn't appear deliberate but it earned Valencia a straight red card and forced Ecuador to try and win the game down a man. It was too much to ask of Ecuador who could only prevent France from scoring in the end.

What we learned from Ecuador

If they got this defensive performance in the Switzerland game then they'd likely have at least 1 more game to go in this tournament. They did surrender too many chances on goal but closed out the French players from the very dangerous chances and got great goalkeeping from Dominguez to pick them up. The only South American not to make the Round of 16, they have strong core of players to build on for next tournament run.

What we learned from France

You can't be on offensively all the time. Scored 8 goals in their first 2 games but held off the score sheet in this one by a strong performance from Dominguez in Ecuador's goal. Part of the scoring woes may have been experimenting with personnel but everything looked a little off for France today. Defensive line held strong for third game in a row and had good performances from young replacements like Digne and Schneiderlin.

Going Forward

Ecuador knew they would likely need a win and some help in this game and they were unable to pull out 3 points. The worst of the South American teams in the tournament, Ecuador actually outperformed a lot of expectations in this tournament.

France face Nigeria in the Round of 16. Should be favoured in that game but cannot afford to look past Nigeria to a potential Germany match in the quarterfinals.

Overview

It would take nothing short of a miracle for France to finish anywhere but first in this group. Meanwhile Ecuador likely need to upset what his been to-date the best team in the tournament if they want to continue their run in this World Cup.

It's desperation time for Ecuador. Currently second in Group E but with Switzerland likely facing a win against Honduras at the same time, Ecuador will have to find a way to top the French in order to secure a place in the knockout round.

France will definitely be without one starter this game as Yohan Cabaye is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Will be interesting to see if Didier Deschamps wants to rest players in this match or keep their fantastic momentum going through to next game.

Regardless of personnel, France will be a tough out for Ecuador. Very strong defensively but absolutely deadly on the attack. Karim Benzema leads the way with 3 goals but could easily have 6 to his credit already. If he plays, shutting down Benzema is of the utmost importance for the Ecuador defence.

Ecuador have their own striker making waves in this tournament though. Still a relative rookie internationally, Enner Valencia has all 3 Ecuador goals this tournament and will be counted on as the best chance Ecuador have of defeating France today.

Personnel

Operating under the assumption France does not sit players

In the Ecuadoran Third: This could be another bloodbath. Ecuador are easily drawn out of position and can lose track of players in the defensive end. That plays exactly in to what France wants. France have scoring from everywhere and are great at playing balls to places the defence isn't, knowing a French player will be there. Ecuador have to be aware at all times of where the French attackers are and that still probably won't be enough to stop them. Advantage: France.

In the Midfield: No Cabaye for France but wouldn't expect Ecuador to celebrate too much as France have loads of players they can plug in all over the field without missing a beat. France's ball movement in the midfield is superb and they can get the ball forward quickly in no time at all. May be a bit more passive defensively today but Ecuador will be on their heels here without the ball. Advantage: France.

In the French Third: They let off against the Swiss up 5-0 but this is an impressive French back line. There were concerns about the inexperience in the middle but Varane and Sakho have proved more then up to the task. Ecuador have gotten a bevy of goals from Valencia but aren't the best when it comes to creating and setting up chances and France should smother them in their own third. Advantage: France.

Goalkeeping: Lloris far and away the class of the group in goal. Advantage: France.

Ecuador will win if:

Rotate well defensively for 90 minutes and prevent France from getting open men in their penalty area or clear shots. Offensively, have to use their wingers to get behind Debuchy and Evra and allow them to get downfield and find ways to deliver the ball to Enner Valencia in the centre.

France will win if:

No changes need to be made. Keep up the free-flowing movement of the ball offensively and understand when the play is gone and get back defensively when necessary. Has been no team more impressive in group play then this French side. Don't change what you don't have to in a short tournament like this.

Prediction

Ecuador is the latest team to feel the French wrath in this tournament, whether they rest players or not.

Colombia's 2 wins put them free and clear and all but locked in to first place in the group. It's a 3-way battle for second place and all 3 teams have a shot. Ivory Coast are the favourite to advance. They face Greece and should be through with a draw. Greece and Japan absolutely need wins in their final game in order to have a shot at the knockout round. I have a tough time seeing Japan beat Colombia which eliminates them. And Greece have yet to score at all this tournament against a fast, physical Ivory Coast team. Look for Ivory Coast to grab second in the group.

England are out after two losses to open their tournament. Costa Rica are the darling of the tournament meanwhile having knocked off two prior champions and wrapped up a knockout round spot today.. They'll secure first place if they can take a point off a third former champion in their final group match against England.

All eyes will be on Italy-Uruguay in their group match. Only one of the teams will make the Round of 16 and the edge goes to Italy, as they hold the goal differential tiebreaker. An Italy win or tie sends them through to the knockout round, while only a win will get Uruguay through.

All 4 teams still mathematically in contention to advance or be eliminated. France are through for all intents and purposes though. Honduras is likely out needing a win against Switzerland and some goal differential to go their way in their last match.

With Ecuador set to face France as well, Switzerland look to be the likely team to take second place in this group, despite their blowout loss today.

Game 25 Recap: Switzerland 2-5 France

SWITZERLAND 2-5 FRANCE

A pair of late goals gave the Swiss some semblance of respect from this game but this was a debacle for them from start to finish, and saw the French slice up the Swiss defence like...well, cheese.

Bad news to start the game for Switzerland as starting central defender Steve von Bergen got caught with a high leg by Olivier Giroud. He immediately left the game to be replaced by Philippe Senderos. CBC stated on their broadcast that von Bergen went straight to hospital with what was believe to be a fractured cheekbone and potential damage to his eye. His tournament is likely over for Switzerland.

von Bergen missed an absolute onslaught by the French team in this one. Threatening the Swiss goal from the start, France got on the board in the 17th minute. 6'4" Olivier Giroud rose above everyone in the penalty area and got his head to a corner kick. Diego Benaglio dove and got his fingertips to the ball but not enough to drive it out of the corner of his goal and France led 1-0.

The floodgates opened not 2 minutes later. On the restart after the goal, the Swiss turned the ball over in midfield leading to a quick French counter-attack. Karim Benzema found Blaise Matuidi running down the left flank and Matuidi's shot eluded Benaglio inside the near post for the 2-0 lead.

Switzerland saw some glimmers of hope as the half progressed. Granit Xhaka volleyed home a bouncing ball in the French area but was just offside on the play. That was followed shortly by Xherdan Shaqiri firing just wide on a big Hugo Lloris rebound. Turning up the pressure was risky though and Switzerland paid right after.

Left back Stephan Lichtsteiner gave the ball away in midfield and left all kinds of room for Benzema to explode up the wing. Benzema was eventually brought down for a penalty kick in the Swiss area. The penalty was saved by Benaglio and Yohan Cabaye fired the rebound in to the crossbar. Switzerland escaped that time but it was clear from this point on this was France's day.

A Mathieu Valbuena goal just before half put an end to any doubt of that fact. Benzema and Moussa Sssoko also scored in the second half to send France up 5-0. Switzerland came to life in the closing stages, as both Blerim Dzemaili and Xhaka found the back of the net but it was far too late.

Fitting for the game and his tournament, Benzema scored as the game ended but the referee blew the full-time whistle just before the ball went in and the goal was waved off. Currently tied for the goal scoring lead with 3 goals, Benzema has also had a missed penalty kick, and 2 goals taken away from him by officials so far. Not a bad effort through 2 games.

Goals

Switzerland: Blerim Dzemaili (81'), Granit Xhaka (87')
France: Olivier Giroud (17'), Blaise Matuidi (18'), Mathieu Valbuena (40'), Karim Benzema (67'), Moussa Sissoko (73')

Discipline

Switzerland: N/A
France: Yohan Cabaye (Yellow 88' - Misses next game)

Man of the Match

So many options for France...Karim Benzema scored one, and assisted on two other goals to continue his brilliant World Cup. That isn't including a saved penalty kick and his volley at game end that was discounted by the referee's final whistle. Absolutely everywhere for France and Switzerland had no hope of containing him.

Key Moment

Immediately after falling down 1-0, Switzerland turned the ball over in midfield off the restart. Benzema played the ball through for Blaise Matuidi who carefully put it between Benaglio and the near post for the 2-0 lead, just over a minute after their first tally. The rout was on at this point as Switzerland were never going to come back from this point onward.

What we learned from Switzerland

Went from surrendering 2 goals in their past 8 World Cup matches to giving up 5 in one game. It very easily could have been much more if not for Diego Benaglio bailing them out in goal on a few saves. No support from the midfield on French counter-attacks and Swiss defence unable to handle the precise passing and speed of the French off the wings. They have a chance to recuperate in their last game against Honduras but this was ugly and not sure how they'll cope if they can make the knockout round.

What we learned from France

This team is frightening when they have the ball on the attack. 5 goals from 5 different players in this game and every rush up the field it looked as if they would find a way to get the ball in the back of the net. Gave up a pair of goals in garbage time but held the Swiss at bay for the rest of the game defensively. Not a team at the World Cup that can claim to be better in every aspect of the game then France is.

Going Forward

Math has to be sorted out but France should end up winning the group with Switzerland coming second. Critical victory for France though who should be able to avoid Argentina in the Round of 16. Way they're playing though, it may not matter who they face. Switzerland catch a break with Honduras to close off their group stage. Need 3 points against the weak Honduran team to secure advancement though.

Overview

Potential for both compelling intrigue and incredible boredom in this contest as the western European neighbours meet and battle for the likely top spot in Group E. Similar in style of play, lifetime record, calibre of players, and pretty much everything else, this game could be a fast-paced end-to-end affair or get held up in the midfield for the duration.

France come in to this game flying high after they continued a run of strong play in pre-tournament with a 3-0 destruction of Honduras. That performance was led by Karim Benzema who scored twice and had a hat trick taken away by the scorer who credited his third goal as a Honduran own goal.

Switzerland also enter off a win although they found theirs under vastly different circumstances. Surprisingly trailing Ecuador at halftime, the Swiss picked up second-half goals from a pair of substitutes, including the winner with no time on the clock to pick up the victory.

Neither side have injury issues to worry about and we should see a very similar lineup on both sides to the ones from their openers.

France deploy a 4-3-3 type formation with a pair of wingers and Benzema as the lone striker. Their central midfielders of Cabaye, Pogba and Blaise Matuidi will be critical in this game to try and break down the vaunted Swiss defence as well as control the Swiss midfield.

Switzerland go with a 4-2-3-1 formation and rely almost solely on their attacking midfielders for offensive pressure. Xherdan Shaqiri should again be the big play man for their side as they attack the young French central defence.

Personnel

In the Swiss Third: It was a disappointing effort from Switzerland defensively I felt in their first game. This is a top-quality unit that got exposed by quick runs through their lines. That isn't really the French style of play though, especially with no Franck Ribery. Switzerland will be familiar with the style of offence they're seeing and I expect them to shut it down effectively. Advantage: Switzerland

In the Midfield: I could look at this game for days and not discern any advantage here. Both sides have midfielders that defend well, can drive an attack and do pretty much everything you ask of them. This game will be determined here and on paper, there's nothing separating the two. Advantage: Even

In the French Third: The weak part of this Swiss team. They did get a pair of goals from forwards off the bench but struggled to get anything going from their starters against a poor Ecuador back line. France are young at the central defender position but looked more then capable against Honduras and they won't be afraid of what the Swiss throw at them up front. Advantage: France

Goalkeeping: Like the midfield, very little separating them here. I think Lloris is better positionally in goal but Benaglio the more athletic. Advantage: France by a slight margin.

Switzerland will win if:

Absolutely need to get quality play from their striker. It's not known if it will be Josip Drmic or one of the other young Swiss forwards. Drmic was invisible against Ecuador and almost all Swiss offence had to come out of their midfielders or wing backs. France will crowd the front of their box and keep the Swiss midfield at bay unless the Swiss can offer some kind of forward threat to counter. This is the Swiss achilles heel and they need improvement desperately to have success against a team like France.

France will win if:

Use Valbuena and Griezmann on the wings to get behind Lichtsteiner and Rodriguez defensively and get that penetration in to the Swiss back line. Switzerland are too strong defensively to attack head on with Benzema. Switzerland gave up chances to Ecuador when the ball was amongst their back line as they lost their positioning somewhat. Send the ball long for the 2 speedy wingers and let them probe the Swiss penalty area from the corner.

Prediction

I'd be surprised if this game lives up to the hype around it. Both teams very strong defensively and in the midfield and should stalemate. France the more potent offensively so if there is a winner I'd tip them to come out on top but my guess is the game ends in a draw.

Switzerland 1-1 France
