Some World Cup/Confederations Cup Schedule Announcements

FIFA held a press conference announcing some details for the schedules of both the upcoming Confederations Cup in 2013 and World Cup in 2014. While the full schedule remains incomplete, the details released today are as follows:

Confederations Cup:

4 venues known for certain: Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro. 2 more have been conditionally approved, likely dependent on whether or not venues are anticipated to be completed in time. Those venues are Recife and Salvador.

The opening match of the Confederations Cup (scheduled for June 15-30 2013) will be played in Brasilia. Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza will host the semifinals and Rio de Janeiro will host the finals. Entire match schedule will be released closer to the event.

5 of the 8 participants are already known: Brazil (host), Spain (2010 World Cup Champion), Japan (2011 Asian Cup Champion), Mexico (2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup Champion) and Uruguay (2011 Copa America Champion). The field will be rounded out by the 2012 OFC Nations Cup Champion, the Euro 2012 Champion and the 2013 African Cup of Nations Champion.

I'll have full coverage of the Confederations Cup as we get closer to it. Some filler material recapping how the aforementioned teams qualified will be forthcoming.

Obviously doesn't mean much without the teams to go with it but tells us a bit about the venues. 12 venues are in use this world cup, and each venue will host 4 preliminary round matches. 4 venues will then be dropped from the schedule: Cuiaba, Curitiba, Manaus and Natal. None of these 4 venues will host a Brazil match either. The 8 remaining venues will each host 1 Round of 16 match. Those games will be the final matches played in Porto Alegre and Recife. Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Salvador and Sao Paulo will each host 1 further match (either a quarterfinal or a semifinal) before making their exit as a venue. Brasilia hosts a quarterfinal and the 3rd place match while Rio de Janeiro will have a quarterfinal and the final.

Once we get closer to the tournament, I'll have breakdowns of the host cities and venues.
